Jurgen Klopp says a Liverpool return is "theoretical", a stance that could shorten odds in long-term manager markets — punters might place small stakes on Klopp as a future Liverpool manager or monitor ante-post value if results falter at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed it remains "theoretical" that he could one day return as Liverpool manager, insisting that if he did come back to England it would only ever be to Anfield. Klopp, who departed after nine years at the end of the 2023/24 season, made the comments on the Diary of a CEO podcast and stressed his current role suits him for now.
Klopp explained his decision to leave was driven by exhaustion rather than a loss of love for the game. He said he had been "running out of energy" after roughly 1,080 matches in the dugout and did not miss the relentless demands of coaching — long spells standing in the rain, frequent press conferences and multiple weekly interviews. At 58, Klopp suggested he might reconsider in a few years but refused to make any firm lifetime declaration.
After leaving Liverpool, Klopp accepted the position of global head of soccer at Red Bull, officially starting in January. He described the work as different to day-to-day coaching: "I love what I do now. I don't miss coaching... I don't miss being in the dressing room." The role allows him to stay involved in football without the same personal toll as first-team management.
Klopp also revealed he declined approaches from Manchester United in 2013. He said the timing was wrong and the project did not align with his values, recalling conversations in which he was told the club could simply "get all the players we want." Klopp rejected the idea of assembling marquee names as a quick fix, citing past moves that had failed to work in the long term.
Klopp's admission that a return is possible will likely attract attention in long-term managerial markets. Bookmakers could shorten odds on Klopp as a future Liverpool manager if Liverpool experience a downturn. For punters, a small speculative stake on ante-post markets may offer value now, while watching for sharper prices should Liverpool hit a rough patch or a managerial vacancy appears.
Jurgen Klopp says "it is possible" he could return to manage Liverpool again one day.
