Italy has established itself as the dominant force in men's international team tennis after clinching a historic third consecutive Davis Cup title on Sunday.
The Italian squad, captained by Filippo Volandri, defeated Spain with a decisive 2-0 scoreline in a dramatic final held at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna.
Two Italian players were pivotal in clinching Italy's fourth overall Davis Cup trophy: Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Pablo Carreño Busta 6-3, 6-4, and Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.
The championship clash saw both teams missing their respective star players: Italy was without Jannik Sinner and Spain was without Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner had said he would skip the Davis Cup in order to focus on last week's ATP Finals in Turin, which he won, defeating Alcaraz, who was forced to withdraw from Spain's Davis Cup Finals team because of injury.
The 2025 victory is the first time Italy has lifted the Davis Cup on home soil, adding to the country's previous wins in 1976 (against Chile), 2023 (against Australia) and 2024 (against the Netherlands).
Italy's president Sergio Mattarella has invited the victorious men's team, together with the Italian women's team, to the Quirinale Palace in Rome to celebrate the triumph.
Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri also extended a welcome to city hall to Berrettini and Coboli, "two Roman guys who grew up together in the clubs of the capital and have made history in Italian tennis".
Organised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis and is contested annually between teams from more than 150 competing countries.
