Man United step up interest in Nigerian star after release clause revealed | Sporting News

Wilfred Ndidi's potential move to Manchester United could be a game-changer for punters, as his arrival could enhance United's midfield strength and overall performance, making them more competitive in upcoming matches. With his experience and defensive capabilities, betters might consider backing United more favorably in the market.

Manchester United are going through a massive transformation this summer, and they desperately need players who can elevate the quality of the roster after a dismal performance last season.

They have already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are working on a couple of more deals. While reinforcements in attack and a new goalkeeper are the primary areas of concern, they also need a midfielder who can bring guile and physicality to Ruben Amorim's system.

Therefore, according to reports on talkSPORT, United have emerged as surprise contenders to lure away Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City. The Foxes have suffered relegation last season, and therefore, there's a possibility of signing the 28-year-old for a nominal transfer fee.

Following the relegation, the Nigerian midfielder's release clause has crashed down to £9 million, handing an opportunity to United to secure a solid Premier League-experienced midfielder who brings guile, defensive solidity, and combativeness at a very viable price. If they strike this deal, it would allow the Red Devils to invest the majority of the funds in other transfers.

Interestingly, United had shown interest in the Leicester star last summer, and now they have rekindled their interest due to his low release clause. However, United will have to fend off competition from Everton, who are also interested in landing the 28-year-old defensive midfielder.

What could Ndidi bring to Manchester United?

United were reportedly interested in Ndidi last season, but the 28-year-old decided to continue at King Power Stadium and signed a three-year deal with Leicester City. But Ndidi's move could depend on whether INEOS chiefs manage to get suitors for Casemiro, who continues to get linked with Saudi Pro League clubs this summer.

It is believed that Ndidi could only join the club when Casemiro decides to move on. The Nigerian midfielder is a similar profile to the Brazilian, and United, keeping both in their roster looks unlikely.

Ndidi has featured in 220 Premier League matches, all of them for Leicester City. He joined Leicester City in 2017 from Belgian outfit Genk, and since then, he has been a pivotal player for the Foxes over the years.

The 28-year-old Nigerian brings PL experience, physicality, and defensive steel to any team that he would join this summer. As per FBref, he has averaged 3.9 tackles, 3.10 clearances, 1.82 blocks, and 2.36 aerials won per 90 minutes in their 28 appearances in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
